I’ve worked as a psychiatric nurse almost exclusively with children and families since the late 70s in a variety of settings; initially with in-patient programs.  Over the past 20+ years as a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, my practice has included private, public and day treatment outpatient programs, along with providing more acute partial hospitalization and intensive in-home services aimed at preventing hospitalization in vulnerable and underserved youth. 

Psychiatry is a team process.  Although medication is usually integral to treatment, an important focus is finding patterns or dynamics fueling problems while building and strengthening solid skills to better handle difficulties. This work happens in sessions, but issues can also require family or individual therapy for optimal results. “Meds work faster, but therapy skills are more enduring.”

I’ve done telepsychiatry for over 15 years.  Creating a working relationship requires flexibility and trust based on open and sometimes difficult discussions.  At other times humor, a light touch, and gradual exploration is more appropriate for the work.  If I could boil down a key patient concern which informs my approach, it’d come from years of patients describing previous providers; “I didn’t feel heard or listened to.”

Tim sees patients via Telemedicine only in the state of Oregon.
